Hatha Yoga> Asana:Asanas prepare the body and mind for the advanced practices of Yoga. Some Yogasanas are mainly used for meditative practices. Some Yogasanas are practiced for the strengthening of body. Asanas prepare the body and mind to achieve higher levels of meditation. Hathayoga Pradipike gives only few important Asanas which are accepted by Great sages such as Vasishta and Great Yogis such as Matsyendra. They are:
Swastika is an auspicious Tantrik symbol. It is a symbol of fertility and creativity. As this Asana resembles Swastika, it is called as Swastikasana. Having firmly inserted both foots between the thighs and knees , he should sit erect on a level place. This is Swastikasana. GO means cow Mukha means face. This Asana resembles the face of cow. So this Asana is called Gomukhasana. Perform Padmasana. Insert left hand between left thigh and left knee, right hand between right thigh and right knee as much as possible. Lift the body leaving pressure on hands.
Place your hands firmly on the ground and support the whole body on your elbows. Put weight on the elbows lift the feet in the air. Legs should be straight and should be in level with the head. This is called Mayurasana. This Asana is in the name of Great Yogi Matsyendranatha. As Maha Yogi Matsyendranatha was meditating in this Asana, this Asana is named as Matsyendrasana. Having stretched both the legs, like a stick, and having grasped the toes of both the feet with both the hands, resting the forehead on the knees, it is called Paschima-tana. This is most excellent of all Yogasanas Lie on you back. Palms should be upwards and should 15cms away from the body. Palms should be bended little. Let there be a distance of 1 foot between the foots. Feets should be in a position as if touching the ground. Head and back should be in a straight line. Head should not slant and should face upwards. Close the eyes. Relax the whole body. There should not be any movement in any part of the body. Watch the breath with ease and with out any strain.
Place right foot on the left thigh and left foot on the right thigh. This is called Virasana. Virasana is the another name of Padmasana.
